As part of the RAW Ciné-club** conceived in collaboration with Aboubacar Demba Cissokho, Raw Material Company has organized a projection and debate around the film Ceddo, a feature film (120mn) by Ousmane Sembène, released in 1977, Friday, June 16, 2023 at 6:00 pm.
Synopsis: At the end of the 17th century, Christian and Muslim missionaries attempt to convert the Ceddo, a community with animist beliefs. At the end of the 17th century, Islam and Christianity penetrated Africa, and the slave trade wreaked havoc. All means were used to fill churches and mosques. The Ceddo tried to preserve traditional African culture against the onslaught of Islam. When King Demba goes to war with the Muslims, a Ceddo kidnaps his daughter, Princess Dior Yacine, to protest against her forced conversion to Islam. In trying to free her, the heirs to the throne are killed, the king is assassinated, but in the end the kidnappers are defeated and all the villagers forcibly converted.
"CEDDO is a thought-provoking film. It brings together true events from a period spanning several centuries to the present day. A reflection on the usurpation of power. Prefiguring our current coups d'état in Africa. Reflection on the complicity of feudal lords with the current bourgeoisie in Africa. Reflection on revealed religions, direct accomplices or "In" to the alienation of African man - even today. Reflection on the slave trade for today's junk and gadgets. Reflection on African Spiritualism."
Ousmane Sembène
