Archipelagoes of bond

Screening of short films followed by a conversation about the practice of artist
Janilda Bartolomeu with Ramon Amaro and Zineb Seghrouchni.

7 pm at Cinéma Empire

RAW Material Company, presents the work of Janilda Bartolomeu, in collaboration with the Nieuwe Instituut. In the heart of the Médina district, the emblematic Cinéma Empire will be the venue for the evening's public programme. The screening of a series of short films, including the most recent, made in Dakar, will be followed by a conversation between the artist and her guests.

Janilda's initial research led her to trace the little-documented history of the Cape Verdean diaspora, prompting her to further explore silent narratives. Janilda Bartolomeu's collaboration with RAW Material company, which will be further developed during a research residency in 2025, explores this question of the transmission of community identity and the sense of belonging across borders. In the context of Senegal, a host country for Cape Verdeans, she draws on the echoes of families, their history and their evolution.

This public program would not have been possible without the contribution of the Nieuwe Instituut.
