PRECARIOUS IMAGING

PRECARIOUS IMAGING

This exhibition is the second act in a year-long programme that addresses Personal Liberties with an emphasis on homosexuality and the growing homophobia in African societies.

What does a homosexual look like? Are there mimetic relations between African queer visibility on television an African queer  representation in the community? What are the issues surronding safety with the emerging visibility of the African queer community? What exemples of african queer activism exist? What are the tenets of an African queer aesthetic? What notions - queer-positive or queer negative are being dispelled by the media? these are the questions this exhibiton seeks to answer.

This act was set within the Dakar Biennale OFF program. In 38 out of 54 African countries homosexuality is illegal. The exhibition, curated by Ato Malinda and Koyo Kouoh, explore this reality in the work of artists from Algeria, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Kenya respectively: Kader Attia, Andrew Esiebo, Zanele Muholi, Amanda Kerdahi M. and Jim Chuchu.
