I am currently finishing up my Bachelor’s thesis in Comparative Literature, in which I am doing feminist, postcolonial readings of contemporary chicana literature. I will receive my diploma in January and am hoping to start a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths next fall.
As of a year and a half ago I have been working as a freelance journalist alongside my studies. I have often written extensive, critical stories on cultural phenomena such as art and the city, Mexican neo-muralism and feminist performance art. During one year in Uppsala, Sweden, I was writing and editing for the Student Gender’s Association magazine Verkligheter. In these texts I was doing feminist analysis of contemporary art, movies and books. The same year I also co-funded an organisation aimed at recognising African movie making, which is given very little attention in Sweden. Throughout the year we organised screenings of African films and invited directors and critics to discuss them with our public, and the initiative is still continuing.
In 2013 I spent six months in Dakar, studying French and working with the Senegalese Red Cross. I also volunteered at the Dakar Women’s Group annual exhibition, a fruitful experience since it gave me a broad insight to the contemporary art scene. For the last two years I have been living in Mexico City where I have been very engaged in the local art scene and have been active in organising expositions at several student run and independent art spaces.
