RAW Material Company is pleased to invite you to the vox-ARTIS* talk with artist, researcher, DJ, Producer and Music Programmer Maguette Dieng moderated by Massamba Mbaye at Zone B, rue sans soleil, Villa 2A at 6pm on Wednesday, April 23rd 2025.
In her research residency, artist Maguette Dieng listens not just with her ears, but with memory, movement, and emotion. Her work traces the echoes of lived experience, voices rising from markets, chants carried by wind, the hum of daily life unfolding in public space. Sound, for Dieng, is not just heard; it is felt, remembered, and reimagined.
Through vox-ARTIS, a public program shaped in collaboration with Massamba Mbaye, her process opens into shared space. Conversations unfold in the Pencoo circle an intimate format that invites listening as much as speaking. Here, sound becomes story.
She works with sonic fragments: low-fi cassette recordings, the resonance of a megaphone in an open square, the metallic vibration of objects that catch and amplify energy. These are more than recordings; they’re traces of joy, protest, routine, and resistance. They speak of bodies in motion, of places refusing silence.
What does it mean to hear a city breathe? To follow the rhythm of its footsteps, the call and response of its daily rituals? Dieng weaves these questions into sonic poems, looped phrases, layered voices, whispers stretched into something new. She listens to images, and looks for sound in everything.
Collaborations with artists expand the vision: sound as poetry, sound as architecture, sound as a way of being. In these exchanges, sound is no longer background noise; it is presence. It is how people take up space.
Dieng’s project is a call to listen differently. To hear what often goes unnoticed. To understand identity not just through words or images, but through vibration, rhythm, and resonance. This is a sonic practice rooted in freedom, in joy, in the ordinary beauty of collective life.
